Most porcelain-producing regions developed their craft around local materials. What Reduction Firing Actually Does

Reduction firing works differently. At key stages of the firing cycle, the oxygen supply is deliberately limited, forcing the flame to pull oxygen from the metal oxides within the glaze itself. The result is a chemical transformation: iron oxides shift from their oxidized state, creating warm reds and browns, to their reduced state, creating cool celadons, deep grays, and shifting blues. Copper oxides, similarly, can move from green to a vivid red.

This is why reduction-fired glazes look the way they do: fluid, layered, and slightly unpredictable. The color isn't applied — it emerges from the chemistry of fire and clay. The Role of 1,300°C

The clay particles fuse into a dense, glass-like matrix that becomes far less porous and more durable than lower-fire ceramics.
